Afternoon tea is traditionally a posh pass time, having apparently been invented by a duchess! Now any old vegan Essex girl can stroll into a suave hotel in West London and fill herself up with luxurious sandwiches, teas and sweet treats – all thanks to La Suite West.
The afternoon tea offered is described as a “quintessentially contemporary vegan alternative” to the English tradition and for £21 a head, the portions are generous. The menu consists of:
- a choice of loose leaf teas or coffee
- five different finger sandwiches
- a number of scones with coconut cream, jam and fresh strawberries
- a selection of bite sized cakes
I went for a classic earl grey to wash it all down but BE WARNED, we double checked with the waiter about the jug of milk and found out they had automatically given us dairy milk. It’s a bit of an odd move for a vegan tea and clearly not something which has been thought through, I assume due to the hotel not being vegan. This is something I’m going to contact them about.
By far the most tasty sandwich was the portobello mushroom with pesto and balsamic, but all flavours were impressively inventive. There were a generous helping of sandwiches with a mix of white and brown bread. I could have eaten a trolley full!
The scones were warm and topped with icing sugar. The coconut cream, although not the consistency of clotted cream you would usually have on scones, was nevertheless yummy! Strawberry jam and fresh strawberries finished it off.
To be honest, by the time I got to the cakes, I was about to go off pop! They included a strong, dense chocolate cake, a fruit tart and a fruit cake. I only manage a small bit of each, but enough to determine they were delicious.
Overall, this afternoon tea is good value for money and I would highly recommend it, particularly as a treat for that special vegan in your life! Have you been here for afternoon tea or somewhere else? Let me know in the comments below!
